Hana Transformation

M10TEK provides more than just end-to-end technology services for SAP HANA. M10TEK’s goal is to provide clarity surrounding the technology, the change in business processes, user adoption and alignment with overall Digital transformation objectives. Stated clearly, “SAP didn’t re-invent debits and credits with Hana although it has significantly enhanced performance but it has changed Suite functionality to provide better TCO and time to value based upon modern process definitions.

SAP Hana and SAP S/4 Hana have the profound effect to dramatically alter the way you run your business from logistics and customer service through marketing and finance. It empowers your organization to run in real time with access to real time data allowing you to transact, analyze, adjust and predict instantly.

M10TEK’s approach to Hana is flexible and determined only after a detailed analysis of your organization is complete. M10TEK advisors can help you get started on a HANA project with a solid business case in hand that usually makes sense from a technical TCO perspective.

Many of our clients have started from the place where they have strength which usually involves simple a TCO argument of eliminating hardware across ECC, CRM and BW environments. The efficiencies gained by eliminating the redundant hardware environments and moving to HANA justifies the investment.

After this initial step when TCO is lowered, we help our clients shift the focus to more business - focused projects:

When the Controller says to the CFO, ‘Hey, you know, this report used to take three days. It’s now running in about 15 minutes. What did IT do?’ That’s the door to open a broader business conversation. Once you’re in HANA, you should be able to start looking at things that are related to speed. ‘What if I could close faster?’ ‘What if I could generate work orders faster?’ Those conversations always have value.

So what are the next steps? For existing SAP customers, it’s much easier to move to S/4 HANA if: you’re already running a modern version of SAP ERP, and you have a strong test management plan in place.

Greenfield Vs. System Transformation Vs. Landscape Transformation

Based on experience, we believe there is no single path to a migration, and that rings true for SAP S/4HANA. More pieces of the SAP S/4HANA puzzle are being released every day. What was Simple Finance just last year is now SAP S/4HANA Enterprise Management, the next step in a full suite on SAP HANA.

Breaking ground: Greenfield SAP S/4HANA installations

The cleanest path to Hana involves starting from the ground up. This direction works well for companies completely new to SAP and ready for SAP S/4HANA, or companies willing to ditch the old system entirely and only migrate the data. This can be the easier path for organizations with highly complex customizations and very old systems, although in any greenfield migration, there are still important decisions and preparations to be made.

The key components to a successful SAP S/4HANA installation aren’t anything new; building a schedule, cleaning up data, assigning ownership, and creating teams.

The brownfield migration: Challenges and best practices

Organizations planning to move from an existing SAP ECC installation are going to find the road to SAP S/4HANA more involved. In addition to the steps you’d perform in a greenfield migration, you’ll also be handling ABAP code corrections and other technical migration issues. Sandboxes will be of particular importance during these migrations; you’ll want to test everything extensively before the go-live, and you’ll want to keep testing even after you deploy SAP S/4HANA on the off chance you’ve missed something. Be aware that a brownfield migration is not a quick path to SAP S/4HANA. A phased approach is probably the best approach as you assess your current SAP landscape and determine the most pressing issues to handle first. It can take months to ensure that the data is clean and the system is ready.

Customers on EhP 6 or EhP7 are better prepared to begin a brownfield migration. Those on older versions will need to upgrade first to make the transition.

Final conclusions

SAP has come a long way from BW on HANA as a parallel database. Running a business on the S/4 HANA platform, including HANA Cloud Platform extensions and startup applications, is a far more compelling proposition – one that will put IT and business executives in the same room, sooner or later, to rethink what IT is now capable of.
